23 Sep Ocean Keeper Club: A Double Dive with OceanX and the Majestic Manta Rays
In August, we hosted two Ocean Keeper Club (OKC) sessions, with a special highlight on August 24 featuring an online streaming event with OceanX, followed by Session 8 on August 31 titled “Pari Manta si Layangan Laut”.
The streaming class that collaborated with OceanX was attended by 33 students. The 30-minute event began with an introduction to OceanX and their cutting-edge research vessel, OceanXplorer. Students were given a unique opportunity to hear directly from the OceanX team, including one of their experts on board, who provided insights into their mission and ongoing oceanic research.
The highlight of the session was an interactive Q&A, where students eagerly asked questions about ocean exploration, marine science and the work being done aboard the OceanXplorer. The event offered a rare glimpse into the life and operations of marine researchers, captivating the students and sparking their curiosity about the world’s oceans.
The excitement continued on August 31 with OKC Session 8, focusing on manta rays with the theme “Pari Manta si Layangan Laut”. During this session, Marthen Welly, CTC Senior Marine Conservation Adviser, shared fascinating facts about manta rays. Marthen Welly also explained the critical role manta rays play in the marine ecosystem, highlighting their importance in maintaining the balance of ocean life and the need for their protection.
Students were particularly engaged in learning about the size of manta rays, their unique behaviors and their migratory patterns. An interactive activity allowed them to measure the width of a manta ray, helping to demonstrate just how large these gentle giants can be. The students were enthusiastic throughout the session, asking many insightful questions about how manta rays can be protected and what individuals can do to help conserve these magnificent creatures.
Both sessions were a success, leaving the students inspired and more knowledgeable about marine life and conservation efforts.
