28 Apr Local Youth Take Action on Ocean Plastic Pollution

Last Sunday, April 28, 2019, CTC joined the “Make A Wave” event – a youth led activity which aimed to raise awareness against ocean plastic pollution. The event was a school project by high-school students from Gandhi Memorial International School (GMIS) and gathered closed to 200 individuals from all over Bali to clean up Mertasari Beach in Sanur. After the clean up, participants joined environmental lectures by CTC and upcycling workshops by Akademi Hijau, DuaKala Recycle, and Bali Astri Lestari at the Sanur Sunday Market and Mercure Resort Sanur.

The CTC team led an interactive lecture on the importance of coral reefs to thousands of marine animals and to millions of people and the need to protect them from plastic pollution.

“Although Bali has been banning plastic bag from this year but I still see people rely on plastic bags. And I think people know that plastic is really bad for the environment but I do not think they know whether the alternative of plastic. Maybe if I open workshops and promote plastic alternatives they will get inspirations”- Nana, an 11th grade student from GMIS and the lead organizer of Make A Wave Bali.
