22 Dec Strengthening the Path Toward Sustainable Marine Conservation Through MPA Green List Workshop
Â
The Coral Triangle Center (CTC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), organized the Bali Marine Protected Area (MPA) Green List Workshop on June 24–25, 2025, in Sanur, Bali. The two-day workshop aimed to strengthen the implementation of effective and equitable management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Indonesia through the IUCN Green List framework.
The event brought together 26 participants from national and local institutions, including representatives from MMAF, Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Bali Province, the Denpasar Coastal and Marine Resource Management Center (BPSPL), academic institutions, and local conservation organizations.
During the workshop, participants reviewed the status of Nusa Penida MPA in Bali using the IUCN Green List Standard, which serves as a global benchmark for well-managed protected and conserved areas. The discussions focused on assessing MPA management effectiveness, identifying strengths and challenges, and outlining key steps to achieve Green List certification.
Experts from CTC and IUCN introduced participants to the updated Green List process and tools, including the Site Evaluation Matrix and the Green List Information System. Group exercises and facilitated discussions helped participants better understand how to apply the Green List criteria and indicators to their respective MPAs.
The workshop concluded with a shared commitment among participants to continue improving MPA governance, stakeholder engagement, and adaptive management practices. Participants also agreed to enhance coordination between local and national government in advancing Indonesia’s targets for effective and equitable MPA management.
Through this workshop, CTC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s progress toward achieving the national goal of protecting 30 percent of marine areas by 2045. The event marked another important step in strengthening capacity and collaboration to ensure that Bali’s MPAs are managed effectively and sustainably for the benefit of people and nature.
