20 May Whale Watching Code of Conduct Training Held in Alor

Coral Triangle Center joined a successful Workshop and Socialization on the Code of Conduct for Whale Watching Tourism in Alor on March 25–26, 2025. The event brought together 67 participants from government agencies, tourism operators, local communities, NGOs, and academic institutions to discuss best practices in marine mammal ecotourism.

The workshop featured insightful presentations from key experts–Mr. Muhammad Saleh Goro (Acting Head of Implementation Unit of the Alor Island Marine Park), Mr. Benjamin Kahn of Planet Deep, and Mr. Alex Tanody from Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Kupang.

Topics ranged from conservation-based ecotourism principles to interaction guidelines and ethical whale and dolphin watching. The sessions emphasized the critical role of collaboration among stakeholders in promoting sustainable tourism that benefits both the environment and local communities.

Participants gained a deeper understanding of how to implement the Code of Conduct (CoC) in real-world settings, while also exploring the challenges and opportunities ahead. The workshop served as a platform to build stronger cooperation between government bodies, businesses, and grassroots groups to support responsible marine mammal tourism.

A highlight of the event was the field practice, joined by dive operators and representatives from the Indonesian National Armed Forces and the Indonesian National Police. During the 3.5-hour observation session, five cetacean species were sighted—one Bryde’s whales (Balaenoptera brydei), 25 Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), 80 Fraser’s dolphins (Lagenodelphis hosei), 8 Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris), and 90 Melon-headed whales (Peponocephala electra).

Although some whales were spotted at a distance, their dorsal fins allowed for clear identification. The successful sightings served as a live demonstration of ethical whale watching in action—proving that mindful tourism practices can go hand-in-hand with unforgettable wildlife experiences.
