20 May Strengthening Marine Resource in Lease Islands MPA

On April 28, 2025, CTC in collaboration with the Coastal and Marine Resources Management Unit (CDKP GP VII), successfully conducted a joint marine surveillance and Resource Use Monitoring (RUM) activity in the Lease Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA), Maluku Province.

The activity was attended by nine participants representing various institutions, including the Maluku Provincial Marine and Fisheries Agency (DKP Maluku), Saparua Police Sector (Polsek Saparua), Community-Based Surveillance Group (Pokmaswas), and traditional guardians known as Kewang.

The joint patrol and monitoring aimed to assess marine resource use and ensure compliance with MPA regulations. As part of the monitoring efforts, the team also focused on recording the utilization of marine resources, particularly mobile activities such as fishing and tourism, as well as fixed uses like fish aggregating devices (rumpong), lift nets (bagan ikan), floating net cages (keramba jaring apung), and mooring buoys. Furthermore, the team worked on strengthening interactions between the conservation area management unit and marine resource users to foster better communication and compliance with conservation regulations.

This collaborative effort highlights the importance of multi-stakeholder involvement in the protection and sustainable use of marine resources. By working together, communities and authorities can ensure that the Lease Islands MPA continues to provide ecological and economic benefits for current and future generations.
