17 Apr Supporting Effective Management in Ay-Rhun Marine Protected Area (MPA) through Routine Resource Use Monitoring (RUM) Surveys

On March 20, 2025, CTC conducted a comprehensive RUM survey in the Ay-Rhun Islands MPA, located in Maluku Province. This routine survey was carried out in collaboration with multiple government agencies and local communities, aiming to strengthen law enforcement, encourage the adoption of sustainable practices, and discourage harmful activities by local small-scale fishers and private sector actors.

During the survey, a six-member team embarked on a boat journey from Neira Harbour to several key sites within the Ay-Rhun Islands MPA – Hatta Island, Skaru and Digor – areas known as centers for deep-sea snapper fisheries in the Banda Islands. The survey was completed successfully in a single day, aided by favorable weather conditions that allowed the team to cover all target monitoring areas. Data collection was conducted using the “KoboCollect” application, which functioned effectively throughout the process. The team recommended providing training on the use of this tool to other Ay-Rhun Islands MPA managers and monitoring personnel. Along the way, they also interviewed resource users, gathering valuable insights into local marine resource use.

This collaborative effort involved CTC and the Fisheries Monitoring Division of Island Cluster VI from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MAF) Agency of Maluku Province. CTC remains committed to supporting the effective management of the Ay-Rhun Islands MPA. Strengthened enforcement efforts and active community engagement are essential in addressing violations and ensuring compliance. A collaborative and adaptive management approach will help secure the long-term health and resilience of the MPA, contributing to the preservation of marine biodiversity and the sustainability of local livelihoods in the Ay-Rhun MPA.
