21 Feb Empowering Women through Waste Management Training in Ay-Rhun MPA

From January 21-23, 2025, CTC, in collaboration with Yayasan Cahaya Samudra Indonesia and local government, conducted a comprehensive waste management training for a women’s group in Rhun Island, within the Ay-Rhun Marine Protected Area (MPA), supported by the Sea Forward Ocean Health Fund. This initiative aimed to educate and empower women with the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable waste management. Over three days, participants engaged in a variety of interactive learning methods, including classroom teaching, group discussions, games, and hands-on demonstrations of plastic recycling options. The training encouraged collaborative problem-solving, fostering a shared commitment to improving waste management practices in their communities.

Held in the meeting room of SD Negeri 72 Maluku Tengah, the training brought together 26 participants, including representatives from the Rhun Village Government, the village’s PKK (Family Welfare Program), teachers, and members of the Raudatul Jannah Waste Management Women’s Group. The training also included practical activities such as making ecobricks, biopores, and upcycled products like aglonema flowers and sachet-based accessories, along with organic waste management techniques such as composting and MOL production. A key session, by Yayasan Cahaya Samudra Indonesia on waste management opportunities, introduced income-generating recycling initiatives and included insights from Neira Waste Bank. The training concluded with participants developing one-year waste management plans, fostering collaboration with the other organizations on Ay-Rhun MPA.

“The initiative from the women’s group gathering can turn into real action on the ground. The women’s waste management group has shown that concern can grow into a movement, one that not only manages waste but also protects the ocean and inspires future generations.” shared Mrs. Masnah, Leader of Raudatul Jannah Waste Management Women’s Group on Rhun Island.

Since 2021, CTC has been working closely with local partners and communities in Ay-Rhun MPA, Banda District, Maluku, to enhance waste management practices. These collective efforts are shaping a more sustainable future for Rhun Island, where local communities are actively involved in protecting their environment while fostering long-term waste management solutions. We invite stakeholders, partners, and community members to join us in expanding these initiatives and supporting a cleaner, healthier marine ecosystem in Ay-Rhun MPA.
