18 Nov CTC Launches Adopt-a-Mangrove Program to Mitigate Climate Change and Restore Nusa Penida MPA’s Mangrove Ecosystems

Coral Triangle Center (CTC) officially launched the “Adopt-a-Mangrove” program, aiming to engage the public in the restoration of mangrove forests in Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area (MPA).

Nusa Penida MPA features diverse coastal and marine ecosystems, including mangrove forest on Nusa Lembongan Island. These mangroves provide habitat for animals and birdlife, resources for local communities, and coastal protection from storm surges. Nusa Lembongan’s mangrove forest includes 13 species, the most predominant being the spotted mangrove (Rhizophora stylosa), the cedar mangrove (Xylocarpus granatum), and the large-fruited orange mangrove (Bruguiera gymnorhiza).

“Through the Adopt-a-Mangrove program, we aim to foster a sense of ownership,  responsibility, and appreciation among local communities and visitors, highlighting the critical role mangroves play in maintaining biodiversity and mitigating climate change,” said CTC Bali Portfolio Manager, Wira Sanjaya.

Under the protection of Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, local communities have established regulations to safeguard these valuable forests. To further enhance these efforts, CTC has partnered with the local community group Gili Bhuana, formalizing their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership focuses on operating a mangrove nursery, providing educational opportunities for both locals and tourists, and engaging them in replanting initiatives.

CTC Executive Director, Rili Djohani explains that the MoU outlines a shared CTC commitment to promoting sustainable mangrove management and conservation practices. “Together with Gili Bhuana, we are dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of these ecosystems and inspiring collective action to protect these key ecosystems,” she said.

A representative from Gili Bhuana community group, I Wayan Suarbawa noted that the Adopt-a-Mangrove program will offer various activities aimed at educating participants about the significance of mangroves. “We provide mangrove seedlings to children and community members, allowing them to actively participate in the planting process. Through these activities, we also educate  about the vital role mangroves play in supporting coastal communities, especially here in Nusa Lembongan,” he said.

In addition to the planting activities, the Adopt-a-Mangrove program will invite the public to adopt baby mangroves, allowing them to participate directly in the rehabilitation and restoration of these crucial ecosystems. The program will also emphasize education, incorporating fun learning activities for local children and tourists. These initiatives aim to raise awareness about the essential role mangroves play in maintaining coastal biodiversity, protecting shorelines from erosion, and mitigating the effects of climate change.

CTC hope that by engaging a diverse range of stakeholders—from local villagers to international visitors—the Adopt-a-Mangrove program will cultivate lasting support for mangrove ecosystems in Nusa Penida MPA. By fostering a deeper understanding of the ecological and community benefits of mangroves, CTC aims to mitigate the impacts of climate change for future generations.

The adopter of a mangrove can adopt online by visiting bit.ly/CTCadoptamangrove or by coming directly to our Center for Marine Conservation in Sanur. You can also participate in our fun learning program in Nusa Penida, where you’ll get hands-on experience planting baby mangroves. Each adopter will receive a certificate, a photo of their baby mangrove, and an annual impact report. Adopt a Mangrove now! Help mitigate climate change and restore Nusa Penida MPA’s mangrove ecosystems.
