24 Oct Building Capacity for Sustainable Fisheries in Indonesia

From September 24 to 28, 2024, CTC participated as a trainer in training on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) for the “Planner” level in Ambon. This activity targets fisheries managers in Fisheries Management Areas (FMA) 715, 717, and 718. FMA 715 covers Tomini Bay, the Maluku Sea, the Halmahera Sea, the Seram Sea, and Berau Bay. FMA 717 includes Cenderawasih Bay and the Pacific Ocean. FMA 718 encompasses the Aru Sea, the Arafura Sea, and the eastern part of the Timor Sea.

The training was held by GEF 6 – CFI Indonesia and The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Indonesia (KKP), with the trainers from several institutions such as Marine and Fisheries Training Center (Puslat-KP), Education and Training Center for Government Officials of Sukamandi (BDA Sukamandi), CTC, Politeknik Ahli Usaha Perikanan (Poltek AUP), and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The training was attended by 34 participants. The attendees came from various institutions, including Marine and Fisheries Training Center and Extension of Ambon (BPPP Ambon), Pattimura University, Tual Fisheries Polytechnic, Marine and Fisheries Office of Maluku Province (DKP Maluku), National Fishing Port of Ambon (PPN Ambon), and Development Planning Agency of Maluku Province (Bappeda Maluku). This diverse participation underscores the collaborative effort needed for effective fisheries management in the region.

The four-day training in Ambon covered seven key topics essential to EAFM: (1) identifying fish resources, (2) collecting and providing data and information, (3) defining fisheries management areas, (4) identifying stakeholders, (5) determining priority issues and problems, (6) setting objectives and goals, and (7) developing an action plan. Each topic aimed to equip participants with the necessary tools and knowledge to develop fisheries management plan effectively in their respective areas.

The materials presented during the training are part of a curriculum currently being developed by CTC and collaborators (Puslat KP, BDA Sukamandi, Poltek AUP, and BRIN) to create a self-paced online training program on the CTC Academy website. This training served as a valuable opportunity for CTC to assess the relevance and depth of the training content, ensuring that it meets the needs of the target audience and contributes to building local capacity in fisheries management.

Through this training, CTC demonstrated its commitment to supporting capacity building for local governments, academics, and stakeholders in the fisheries sector in Indonesia. By fostering collaborative and sustainable coastal and marine resource management, CTC aims to enhance the effectiveness of fisheries governance and contribute to the long-term sustainability of fishery resources in Indonesia.
