22 Aug Fun Learning Trip with NUS College Singapore
In late June 2024, our Center for Marine Conservation welcomed National University of Singapore (NUS) College students and faculty for an enriching Fun Learning Trip to the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area (MPA). This engaging experience was designed to immerse participants in marine conservation and community-based environmental management. Through a blend of educational sessions and hands-on activities, the trip aimed to deepen understanding of marine ecosystems and highlight the crucial role of local communities in conservation efforts.
The day began with a discussion on MPA management at Lembongan Water Sport, where CTC was invited by NUS College to share insights into marine conservation practices. To enhance the discussion, I Wayan Suarbawa from Gili Bhuana Pokmaswas joined as a guest speaker, bringing valuable on-ground experience to the conversation. Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of MPA management and conservation strategies. Following this enlightening session, the group  engaged  in  hands-on  activities, including working with local seaweed farmers to learn about sustainable farming practices. The itinerary also featured a visit to the Sandu Care community for a soap- making workshop, where participants discovered how local resources like seaweed are utilized in creating valuable products. The day concluded with a tour of the CTC Center for Marine Conservation, where participants explored the exhibition hall and took part in the adopt-a-coral program.Â
The Fun Learning Trip provided NUS College participants with a comprehensive view of marine conservation, combining educational content with practical experiences. By interacting with local communities and witnessing the impact of conservation efforts firsthand, participants gained a deeper appreciation of the challenges and successes in marine ecosystem management. This experience not only enriched their understanding but also inspired them to advocate for marine conservation in their own communities, extending the reach and impact of these vital efforts.
