We’ve all heard the term “going green” or “green business”, but what about “Green Fins”? The Green Fins initiative is a conservation management approach supported by the UN Environment Program and the Reef-World Foundation that empowers the tourism industry to protect coral reefs through responsible tourism. Marine tourism operators are required to follow a Code of Conduct that encourages divers and snorkelers to practice sustainable tourism.

As of 2018, CTC actively joined this movement as a Green Fins assessor. In the same year, Abyss Dive World and in Pemuteran and Ceningan Divers and Resort received environmental training, risk assessment, and consultations with assessors Marthen Welly and Wira Sanjaya, who have since become active members. Even amidst the pandemic, these dive centers remained committed to preserving the environment and have requested an annual evaluation. Easy Diver in Pemuteran also requested an assessment to become a member. CTC’s Green Fins assessor set out to Ceningan and Pemuteran on April 8th and 13th, 2022, to assess these members/candidates. 

During the assessment period, the crew and staff of the dive centers were given a short course by the assessors regarding Green Fins initiative and Code of Conduct. Every process of the operation and the execution of dive trips were evaluated in detail. The end of the process included discussion with the assessors, where challenges were identified and encouraging feedback were given and steps on how to improve certain aspects were worked out together. The evaluation aside, it was pleasant to reconnect with everyone.

We’re happy to announce that the three dive centers were able to complete their assessment and are now back to an active member status. We’re also very happy to welcome Easy Diver to the family of Green Fins Indonesia. Our golden trio has committed to continue improving their effort and ensure awareness training for members of their staff for another assessment next year.
