17 Sep Celebrating World Manta Day: Protecting the majestic mantas of Nusa Penida MPA

September 17 marks the worldwide celebration of Manta rays. The special day was created to celebrate Manta rays and raise awareness of the threats that these beautiful, mysterious, ocean giants face. CTC held an Instagram Live event to talk about the majestic mantas of Nusa Penida MPA with CTC’s Nusa Penida Project Leader, Wira Sanjaya.

Manta ray populations around the world are under threat and their numbers are falling in many regions. They are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. As filter-feeders, they are very vulnerable to microplastics. As with many marine species, climate crises that cause changes in sea temperature also threaten the habitat of Manta Rays.

In Nusa Penida MPA, various regulations and routine surveillance have been implemented in order to protect the habitat of the Manta Rays. CTC, working together with the MPA Management unit in Nusa Penida, conducts socialization with key stakeholders, such as fishermen and tourism operators to share about the regulation and protection of Manta Rays in Nusa Penida.

As individuals, there are several things that we can all do to help protect Manta Rays. One of many is reducing the amount of plastic waste in our everyday life.  Let’s work together to protect this beautiful ocean giant.
