07 May Obituary Tribute: Tommy Schultz
We at CTC are deeply saddened to hear the news that acclaimed travel and underwater photographer Tommy Schultz passed away on June 4, 2021 in his hometown in Winchester, Virginia. Through his work, Tommy championed ocean conservation for many years. He has donated photos and videos to CTC last year taken during the Epic 1 journey to the Forgotten Islands on the Seven Seas in November last year and some of his iconic photographs appears in our 2021 calendar. Tommy’s underwater photography career began during his service as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Dumaguete, Philippines where he worked on coral reefs. He then moved to Bali in 2007 while working for Photovoices International and later focused on freelance work, highlighting the beauty and diversity of the Indonesian archipelago. One of the common threads throughout Tommy’s work is a love of the ocean, telling the stories of the people, places, and wildlife that are tied to the extraordinary biodiversity and cultures of the Coral Triangle.
Tommy will be sorely missed but continue to live on through his legacy of amazing photos and videos. His work has been published by the National Geographic, Patagonia, The Surfer’s Journal, The North Face, The World Wildlife Fund, Singapore Airlines, Garuda, and many more. A selection of his fine surf photographs have also been exhibited at the prestigious Galerie Jean-Denis Walter in Paris.
His work lives on and can be found on his website: https://www.tommyschultz.com
