CTC Executive Director Rili Djohani will be speaking at a webinar entitled “Protecting the Ocean, UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s Critical Role” organized by the Asean Center for Biodiversity and the Pew Charitable Trusts.
In the zero draft of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) released in January of 2020, proposed action target #2 stated “Protect sites of particular importance for biodiversity through protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, by 2030 covering at least [60%] of such sites and at least [30%] of land and sea areas with at least [10%] under strict protection.” At the 2nd Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Open-Ended Intersessional Working Group meeting in Rome, Italy, in February of 2020, a variety of revisions were proposed to this target. However, the discussion of the percentage figure (30%) has been deferred to the 24th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) tentatively scheduled to take place August 17 – 22, 2020, in Montreal, Canada.
The webinar titled “Protecting the Ocean: UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s Critical Role” will offer ASEAN government representatives and academia an opportunity to hear about the scientific basis underpinning the call to protect and conserve at least 30% of the global ocean.
