01 Feb Did you know? Bali Governor Wayan Koster announced the ban on single-use plastics last December

Did you know? The Bali Provincial Government plans to reduce Bali’s marine plastic pollution by 70% at the end of 2019 by banning single use plastics on the island.  Bali Governor Wayan Koster announced the ban on single-use plastics last December and the new initiative began implementation on January 1, 2019. The regulation carries a six-month grace period in order to give businesses time to adjust to the new law.  The policy is aimed at producers, distributors, suppliers and business owners to suppress the usage of single-use plastics, such as plastic shopping bags, styrofoam and straws, and also encourages individuals to limit their reliance on these products. Administrative sanctions would be imposed on those who do not comply with the ban and we hope to see an increase island-wide awareness about the impact of single use plastic to the environment.

This is a wise and farsighted, courageous gesture. Such measures are needed everywhere, but strong business sector opponents seem to win out in delaying implementation. Congratulations to Governor Wayan Koster and all who worked with him to get this commitment in place. I wish Governor Koster was governor of our Hawaiian Islands.
