31 Jan CTC Supports ICRI’s Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network

CTC Executive Director Rili Djohani and Conservation Advisor Marthen Welly joined the the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) meeting held in Jakarta on January 31-February 2, 2018. The meeting was facilitated by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) and aimed to set up a coral database to collect and analyze long-term coral data at specific sites in Indonesia. MMAF will lead the the development of the database with LIPI and supported by non-government organizations working on coral reef conservation.

CTC supports this network by sharing its data on Nusa Penida and the Banda Islands and hosting a technical workshop later this year. CTC will be contributing site level data to a regional database that will assess coral trends, help raise awareness and support local scientists in East Asia.

During the meeting, the details and mechanisms of the data collection were discussed as well as the data sharing agreement between Indonesia government with ICRI -GCRMN East Asia as well as plans to develop an East Asia status report of coral reef. During the meeting it was also agreed to develop National Coral Reef Monitoring Network in Indonesia.
