02 Aug New Longboat Unveiled to Support Community Patrol in Banda Islands

image004To strengthen the effectiveness of the marine protected areas (MPA) in the Banda Islands, CTC has commissioned a long boat named “Lawere” to help enforce MPA rules and regulations in the Ay Island MPA. The boat is named after a local fish common to the Banda Islands that illuminates at night and lives in the border of coral reef and deep sea. The longboat will support community patrol and entrance fee collection from divers and snorkelers.  The money from entrance fees will be used to carry out routine MPA patrols, a waste management program, and maintain the longboat. CTC also supports Ay Island MPA through a community conservation center which serves as secretariat for the MPA conservation team and a venue for meetings, training, library and marine resource outreach materials in the island.
