17 Jul Coral Reefs in Nusa Penida MPA Get Their Annual Check-up!

It’s the time of the year again to check on the health of reefs and fish in Nusa Penida MPA! From July 17-24, 2017, a dedicated team of divers braved strong currents and swells to measure coral reef coverage and fish biomass in 15 dive sites across the three islands comprising Nusa Penida MPA – Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

The divers were composed of staff and volunteers from CTC, the Department of Marine and Fisheries of Bali Province, Nusa Penida MPA Management Unit, Lembongan Marine Association, Komunitas Penyelam Lembongan, Perkumpulan Penyelam Professional Bali, Marine Megafauna Foundation, and Coral Guardian.

The annual reef health monitoring is conducted to obtain the latest data, including coral reef health condition status and reef fish populations, both of which are an important part of measuring the effectiveness of management in the MPA.  Annual monitoring results are very important for preparing work plans to achieve successful MPA management.  These activities also aim to establish and further strengthen collaborations between partners and managers involved in the Nusa Penida MPA management.

The survey team found high biodiversity in coral reef and fish communities within the conservation zones including healthy populations of both large and juvenile fish.

However, the team also found damaged and dead coral reef communities at several observation sites where there is high impact tourism. As soon as the data is analyzed, we will share updates on live coral coverage and fish abundance and diversity within the Nusa Penida MPA. Stay tuned!
